But regardless of that whichever you choose, the trip and common factor will mean either staying in or driving through Te Anau the gateway to both Milford or Doubtful Sound. 

So let’s take a look at them one at a time so that you can identify the differences. Doubtful Sound is about 300 percent bigger than Milford Sound and therefore has more to see. The overnight trip is essential to see all it offers. The actual journey is about 2 and a half hours from Queenstown to Te Anau and there is a further 30 minute drive from there to Doubtful Sound.
