One of the major cities that make
up the Silicon Valley, Sunnyvale
is a city in the Santa Clara County, California, U.S.A. According to 2000
census, the city had a population of 131,760. In 1770s, Sunnyvale, California
was inhabited by the Spanish. As a matter of fact, the Ohlone were its earliest
residents.
Estrada and Inez Castro,
Lupe Ynigo and Martin Jr. and Mary Murphy were among the first owners of
Sunnyvale, California.
The railroad came to
Sunnyvale, California in 1860s. In 1870s, wheat farming was replaced with fruit
orchards. The first Sunnyvale cannery was founded by James and Eloise Dawson.
In 1897, Encina school
opened as the first school in Murphy.
Dried
fruit production began in 1904. In 1906, the Joshua Hendy works shifted
to Sunnyvale from San Francisco after the company’s building was destroyed by
fire after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
In1906, the Joshua Hendy Ironworks
established its company in Sunnyvale.
That same year, Libby, McNeill
& Libby opened their meat packing company in the same year.
For World War II, the ironworks
company supplied the marine steam engines, naval guns and rocket launchers.
Sunnyvale residents
voted to incorporate, and Sunnyvale finally became an official city in 1912.
In 1939, the National Advisory
Committee for Aeronautics was opened by Ames Laboratory.
In 1956, Lockheed aircraft
manufacturer was headquartered in Sunnyvale, California.
Famous companies like Yahoo!,
Honeywell, Martin and TiVo all have their high-tech companies based in
Sunnyvale. Onizuka Air Force Station is also based in Sunnyvale.
In September 1972, the
first prototype of Pong, one of the first arcade videogames , was installed in
Sunnyvale.
The Sunnydale
Heritage Park Museum was opened to the general public in September 2008.
